Moroccan citizens have called for a boycott of the Mawazine Festival due to their involvement with the Palestinian cause

The Mawazine Festival has announced its latest lineup of artists who will perform from June 22 to June 28. The festival, known for its diversity and eclectic musical offerings, promises the audience an exciting week of entertainment.

The famous Egyptian singer Ahmad Saad will open the festivities on Saturday, June 22 at 10:00 PM on the Nahda stage. Meanwhile, Zina Daoudia, the beloved Moroccan Chaabi artist, will enchant the audience with her energy and unique melodies on the Salé stage. Sunday, June 23 brings a triple treat with Muslim, the Moroccan rapper who will perform at 10:00 PM on the Salé stage, and both Luidji and Yame at the Bouregreg.

Ibtissam Tiskat, the Moroccan actress and pop singer, will also perform on Wednesday, June 26 on the Salé stage. Tiskat participated in the tenth season of Star Academy, where she won the title of Miss Star Academy. On the evening before Tiskat’s performance, Mawazine attendees will experience an exciting Middle Eastern stage with the performance of Nawal Zoghbi. The Lebanese diva, widely regarded as the Queen of Arabic pop, will serenade the audience with her powerful vocals and timeless hits. The Malian singer-songwriter Fatoumata Diawara is also on the list of artists performing at the Mawazine Festival. She will bring her unique blend of traditional Malian music and contemporary sounds to the Bouregreg stage of the festival.

At the end of the week, both IAMDDB, an Angolan rapper and singer, and the Argentine trap icon Nicki Nicole will perform at OLM Souissi. Nicki Nicole’s song “Wapo Traketero” reached the third position on the Billboard Argentina Hot 100 on August 19, significantly boosting the artist’s popularity. Abdelaziz Stati, another Moroccan Chaabi legend, will perform on June 28. His discography includes many beloved and cherished Moroccan music genres such as Aita Chaabi and Kaada. His music is so popular that after his performance at the Mawazine Festival in 2009, a stampede occurred.

With such a diverse, talented, and highly sought-after lineup of artists, this year’s Mawazine Festival promises to make up for the three-year COVID-induced interruption with an engaging celebration of music and culture in the heart of Rabat. The variety of music genres and styles at the festival will undoubtedly attract music lovers to come together and enjoy top-notch performances while creating lasting memories.

The stages of the Mawazine Festival are spread across the city of Rabat. Most stages are easily accessible by public transport and there are parking spaces available for those traveling by car to the festival locations. Admission to the Mawazine Festival is free, except for the area in front of the stage reserved for ticket holders and access passes. Tickets can be purchased both in person and online.

The annual Mawazine Music Festival is currently causing controversy among Moroccans due to the perceived silence about the increasing plight of Palestinians in the wake of Israel’s murderous war against the Gaza Strip. Some have argued that inviting pro-Israeli artists to the event goes against the long-standing solidarity of Moroccans with the Palestinian cause.
