Germany is actively pursuing migration agreements with various countries, including Morocco, Georgia, and Colombia, to attract skilled workers and address labor shortages in the country.

These initiatives were confirmed by the German Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, in a recent interview with Handelsblatt, a German newspaper.

Faeser stated that migration agreements are crucial to facilitate the entry of workers and specialists into Germany, while also expediting the return of undocumented migrants to their home countries.

The German minister added that these agreements create opportunities for qualified and well-trained workers.

The German federal government is expanding its network of migration agreements, having already signed agreements with India in December 2022 and with Georgia at the end of 2023.

According to a government source speaking to Hespress, there are ongoing discussions between Morocco and Germany to streamline the process for attracting qualified Moroccan workers to meet the needs of the German labor market.

The source noted that Morocco has stipulated to the German government that the recruitment of medical and nursing staff from Morocco should be excluded, as these sectors in Morocco are facing severe shortages, as repeatedly emphasized by the Minister of Health and Social Protection.

Faeser’s statements coincide with growing competition between Germany and France to attract doctors from North African countries, particularly Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria. A Mediapart study revealed a global shortage of more than 2.8 million doctors.

The comments by the German official also coincide with a visit to Morocco by Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, the Minister of Economy, Labor, and Tourism of the German state of Baden-Württemberg.

The National Agency for the Promotion of Employment and Skills (ANAPEC), in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), has announced the launch of training programs for qualified workers in Germany, particularly in the fields of automotive mechanics and electronics.

These developments show the growing demand for skilled labor in Germany and the country’s efforts to establish partnerships with countries like Morocco to meet labor market needs, taking into account the specific requirements of both countries.
