The French newspaper “L’Equipe” has announced that the start date of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, scheduled in Morocco, has been postponed to early 2026.

The postponement, according to the sports newspaper, is due to the overlap of the African tournament with the finals of the Club World Cup, which will take place in the summer of 2025 in the United States, with the participation of 32 teams.

The newspaper added, citing Veron Mosengo-Omba, the secretary-general of the African football governing body, that “CAF” has decided to postpone the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations to early 2026, to make way for the Club World Cup in its new version, between June 15 and July 13, 2025.

“We could schedule the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after the Club World Cup in the summer, but that would not be favorable for African players who would have to participate in the World Cup in America and then return immediately to participate in the Africa Cup; it’s not easy for them after a heavy season,” Mosengo-Omba explained.

Hesport had earlier reported through its own sources that the African Football Confederation, in collaboration with FIFA and the Moroccan Football Federation, had reached an agreement to postpone the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for the summer of 2025, to between late 2025 and early 2026.
