The Marrakech International Film Festival Foundation is organizing a workshop on July 16 and 17 in Casablanca to teach and enhance the principles of film criticism for journalists. This workshop will be led by Charles Tesson, vice president of the French Union of Film Critics and former editor-in-chief of Cahiers du Cinéma.

According to a statement from the foundation, this workshop, which is part of the various activities carried out by the foundation to support and strengthen professional activities in the film sector, “provides the opportunity to acquire specific knowledge and skills in film criticism through film analysis and the practice of film criticism, whether it is preparing interviews or writing critical texts.”

The same source adds that this workshop is intended for journalists who specialize in culture and cinema and work in Morocco, who want to learn the principles of film criticism or refine their practice in this area and acquire new tools to develop their skills.

The workshop will be led by “a well-known figure among film enthusiasts, Charles Tesson, who was the general delegate of the Critics’ Week section of the Cannes Film Festival from 2012 to 2021 and was also the editor-in-chief of Cahiers du Cinéma from 1998 to 2003.”

In addition to his work as a film critic, Tesson was also a professor of film history at Sorbonne Nouvelle University (Paris III). He is the author of several books on cinema, including “Satyajit Ray” (1992), “Luis Buñuel” (1995), “Theater and Cinema” (2007), “Akira Kurosawa” (2008), among others.

The workshop program will last two days. The first day (Tuesday, July 16) will be dedicated to the themes “Function of Criticism: History of Criticism, Ethics, Role of Criticism, Function of Criticism. What is the Use of Criticism?” and “Practice of Criticism: Analysis of Critical Texts on a Specific Film.” The second day (Wednesday, July 17) will cover three themes: “Screening of a Feature Film followed by a Discussion: Methodology of Film Analysis to Produce a Critical Text,” “Interview Methodology,” and “Writing Workshop.”

The statement from the Marrakech International Film Festival Foundation notes that participants in this free and limited workshop, which will be offered in both Arabic and French, will be selected after a call for applications, which ends on June 25.

Candidates are invited to visit the festival’s website to view the participation conditions: Marrakech International Film Festival.
