Trend Micro Incorporated, an international cybersecurity company, revealed in a new report that it detected and blocked a staggering 52 million threats targeting Morocco in 2023.

The annual report, titled “Calibrating Expansion,” explains that Trend Micro thwarted more than 40 million email threats, stopped over 1.6 million malicious URL attacks, and prevented more than 3.7 million malware incidents.

Globally, the company neutralized over 161 billion threats in 2023, marking an annual increase of 10%.

Additionally, Trend Micro detected a stunning 349% increase in email malware worldwide, while the number of malicious and phishing URL detections decreased by 27%. The report also identified cloud app access as the biggest risk, with nearly 83 billion access attempts.

Assad Arabi, Managing Director for Africa and Venture Markets at Trend Micro, stated in response to the report’s findings that a “security breach is not always a catastrophe in itself; it is often our response that can escalate it into a major challenge or crisis.”

Highlighting Trend Micro’s efforts in combating the global proliferation of cyber threats, Arabi said his company “helps organizations stay ahead by adopting the latest solutions, including the seamless integration of AI.”

He added, “Our proactive approach allows us to anticipate and address potential breaches before they escalate. Our annual report is a testament to this commitment, showing how we navigate and mitigate breaches, turning potential crises into opportunities for resilience and growth.”

The findings of this report align with previous studies suggesting that Morocco is highly exposed to cyber threats. In December 2023, a report from Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky ranked Morocco as the 15th country with the highest number of online infections in the first 10 months of 2023.
