Contrary to reports spread by local newspapers, Morocco World News has learned from reliable sources within the PR agency of the Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira that neither their event nor the Mawazine Festival will be canceled.

Earlier reports suggested that both festivals would cancel their closing day festivities out of respect for the news of the death of King Mohammed VI’s mother.

However, the PR agency of the Gnaoua Festival confirmed to MWN that all rumors about the cancellation of the previously scheduled concerts are unfounded, and that the festivities will proceed as originally planned.

Regarding the Gnaoua Festival, despite the announced continuation, the joint partnership program with Berklee College of Music has announced that they have canceled their final concert of the program out of respect for the news.

Director of the Gnaoua Festival, Neila Tazi, along with Director Ron Savage of Berklee College of Music, made a joint announcement expressing their sadness over the news of the princess’s death and thanked all musicians for their understanding of the program change.

The official spokesperson of the Royal Palace announced the death of Princess Lalla Latifa, mother of King Mohammed VI, on Saturday, June 29, 2024. She passed away at the age of 78 after an illness.

The statement from the Royal Palace spokesperson expressed deep sorrow and mourning and announced the death of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Latifa on Saturday, 22 Dhu al-Hijjah 1445 AH, corresponding to June 29, 2024 AD.

Princess Lalla Latifa was the wife of the late King Hassan II and mother of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Their Royal Highnesses the Princes and Princesses.

The statement added: “As we mourn this great loss, we pray to the Almighty God to grant His extensive mercy and generous forgiveness to the deceased Princess, to grant her a place in His vast paradise, and to extend the life of our great leader, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to protect him, and to perpetuate his glory and victory, and to make his righteous deeds eternal.
