Morocco is taking a giant leap into the electric vehicle (EV) industry with a pioneering project. Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch signed a 3 billion MAD investment agreement with BTR New Material Group for a cathode production unit in Tangier.

This marks a historic first for Morocco’s electric battery ecosystem. The factory, located within the Mohammed VI Tanger Tech City, will have a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year upon completion. Construction has already begun, with the first phase expected to be operational by September 2026, producing 25,000 tons annually.

BTR, a global leader in EV battery component manufacturing, is leading the project. Their clientele includes major players like BYD, CATL, Volkswagen, and Tesla.

This investment signifies not only Morocco’s growing role in the automotive industry but also strengthens the partnership between Morocco and China.

Minister of Investment, Convergence, and Policy Evaluation, Mohcine Jazouli, emphasized that this is just the beginning. Morocco aims to become a key player in EV battery production and a hub for the electric mobility sector.

The signing ceremony was attended by key figures, including representatives from BTR, Morocco’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Chinese embassy.
