Organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, the first edition of the Moroccan Gaming Expo took place last week, aiming to promote the national gaming industry and showcase its technical, artistic, and educational potential.

Morocco is a true hub for the potential expansion of the gaming industry in African markets, declared Sophie Zhong, vice-president of the Chinese group Century Huatong, on Saturday in Rabat. During a press conference about the “Moroccan Gaming Expo 2024,” Zhong emphasized Morocco’s central role as a strategic hub for the gaming industry in Africa. The press conference offered the Chinese investment group the opportunity to announce their intention to invest in the Moroccan gaming sector and discuss its development potential.

Zhong highlighted Morocco’s significant infrastructure development, stating that this progress “positions the country as a true hub for access to African markets.” Zhong pointed out Morocco’s ambition to develop its gaming sector and praised its efforts and experience in the cultural and creative industries. She also called for the proper localization of electronic industries in Morocco and across the continent to promote mutual interests and video games that are increasingly popular among the majority of Moroccans. In this regard, Zhong emphasized the need to leverage local education systems that use video games for educational purposes, suggesting the possibility of bringing Chinese teachers to Morocco.

The first of its kind in Morocco, the gaming expo, which took place from May 24-26 in Rabat, aimed to promote the national gaming industry and showcase its various technical, artistic, creative, educational, and economic components. Organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, the event served as a platform for Moroccan companies and startups, providing them with the opportunity to interact with international experts in the field and establish partnerships at both national and international levels. The exhibition also provided a chance for passionate young entrepreneurs to strengthen ties with various industry actors and promote entrepreneurial initiatives.

According to the organizers, the focus of the event was on promoting the Rabat Gaming City. This planned government initiative is a production and marketing complex for video games aimed at establishing a cluster of national and foreign companies to create one of the largest hubs in the gaming industry in Africa and the MENA region. Additionally, the organizers stated that the event served to consolidate ties between various players in the gaming sector and promote the gaming industry specifically as a source of employment and value creation for youth.

The exhibition featured seminars, discussions, and training sessions led by experts. Topics covered included a discussion about the Rabat Gaming City and a seminar titled “The Video Game Industry – Trends and Prospects,” among others.
