Portuguese football legend and former Real Madrid star Luis Figo has praised Morocco’s commitment to developing its football program, stating that the North African country is a serious contender to win the 2030 World Cup.

During an interview with international media in Lisbon, Figo, now 51 years old, acknowledged Morocco’s significant investments in recent years to provide new opportunities for young players.

“Morocco has invested very intelligently in recent years to provide new opportunities for young players. I see no reason why the three countries [Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, who are jointly bidding to host the tournament] wouldn’t be serious contenders for the world title in 2030,” said Figo.

However, he also emphasized the competitive nature of the World Cup, where success depends on small margins. “Nonetheless, I want to stress that in a World Cup, the difference between success and failure is very small,” he explained. “With the advancement of the game worldwide, it is likely that many teams will strongly believe in their ability to win the tournament. And this should give us an incredible spectacle!”

Figo’s remarks highlight the growing global recognition of Morocco’s football prowess, which has steadily improved in recent years. The country’s successful bid to host the FIFA Club World Cup 2026, along with the impressive performances of the Moroccan national team in the 2022 World Cup, have further cemented Morocco’s position as a significant force in international football.
