What is the Future?” to discuss the real niche that English has found between the French language spoken by the elite and Moroccan Arabic spoken by the common people.

The panel brought together experts, including booksellers and writers, to reflect on the history of English books in Morocco and to assess new publication needs in English.

During the panel, Aitoruaies emphasized that “young Moroccan people are interested in English as a form of linguistic rebellion, given that French in our context still carries colonial connotations.”

Yacine Rettnani, director of the publishing house La Croisée des Chemins, reflected on the increasing demand for English books in Morocco by emphasizing in a statement to Hespress English that “this trend is just a reflection of what happened 40 years ago with French writings.”

He explained that “this increase in demand for English books could predict a similar trend in the future for another language, probably Moroccan Darija, just as it happened four decades ago with French, and currently with English.”

The panelists expressed their satisfaction with the demand; however, they all emphasized that “it would not replace French or any other language.”

In this regard, Yassine Adnane, a Moroccan writer and TV presenter, emphasized “the importance of preserving other languages because they contribute to the richness of our identity as Moroccans.”

The growing popularity of English books in Morocco delights not only Moroccan booksellers and authors but also their English counterparts. This trend was evident during the International Book Fair, where the UK pavilion presented several authors who were directly in touch with enthusiastic consumers.

Many enthusiastic Moroccan readers of English books, interviewed by Hespress English, expressed their desire to improve their language skills by reading English books, leading to a growing demand for more English-language works.

Our observations at the fair, supported by insights from booksellers, confirm that this increase in demand for English books particularly appeals to young Moroccans.

Despite the growing interest, some Moroccan readers reported difficulties in finding English books on the Moroccan market. This highlights the urgent need for intensified efforts to meet the increasing demand and satisfy consumer expectations.

Nevertheless, it appears that Moroccans welcome the shift towards English and see the growing awareness of its importance as opening up broader perspectives.

HESPRESS ENGLISH

Moroccans are increasingly craving English books, as seen at this year’s International Book Festival, reflecting a growing demand for English literature, particularly among the youth, and a shift away from French dominance.
