Morocco’s unwavering commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) was recently highlighted in an article, showcasing the kingdom’s dedicated efforts presented by the Moroccan delegation during a public meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The article explained that Morocco is at the forefront of AI development globally. By playing a proactive role in shaping the first UN resolution on AI, Morocco demonstrated its great interest and involvement in this field.

The same source emphasized Morocco’s remarkable involvement in drafting the groundbreaking UN resolution on AI, titled “Harnessing the Potential of Safe, Secure, and Reliable AI Systems for Development.”

This achievement was “a source of pride for the delegation,” according to the article, adding that the resolution, co-sponsored by Morocco, the United States, and later by 123 member states, was adopted by the UN on March 21, 2024, reflecting “Morocco’s foresight and commitment to technological advancement.”

The same source further highlighted that “Morocco’s leading role in negotiating this resolution aligns with its substantial contributions to the field within Africa.”

This commitment is further demonstrated by Morocco hosting the first High-Level Forum on AI in Africa in Rabat, in collaboration with UNESCO, where more than 30 countries participated.

“This event showcased Morocco’s active involvement in using AI to create innovative solutions for African communities and promote the continent’s development.”

However, the article mentioned that Morocco faces several challenges in advancing its AI agenda, including securing adequate investments in AI research and infrastructure, addressing skill gaps in the workforce, managing data privacy concerns, and aligning AI development with ethical standards.

The same source emphasized that “Morocco must navigate issues related to job loss due to automation, the ethical use of AI, and ensuring that the benefits of AI are equitably distributed across society.”
